When Does Snoring Occur?

The two main sleep stages are REM sleep, rapid eye movement, and non-REM sleep. Snoring can take place in any or all of the stages of sleep, but is most common during the REM sleep stage. When you are in the REM stage of sleep, your brain sends signals to your muscles, with the exception of breathing muscles, telling them to relax. The tongue and palette relax, causing many people to snore.
